Renton was primarily a coal mining and lumber harvesting town until World War II when Boeing constructed their B-29 Bomber super fortress. The factory has continues to operate and currently produces the 737 aircraft.

Renton is home to three sectors of Boeing: Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Capital, and the Shared Services Group. In recent years, the city has put forth an effort to shed its blue-collar image by developing new high-end homes and condominiums in Renton.
